Donald WressellGuittard’s Chocolate Company’s Executive Chef and Chocolatier, Donald Wressell, really needs no long introduction to listeners. Prior to his joining Guittard Chocolate as the in-house pastry chef, Donald Wressell spent 19 years at the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills where he was named the 2005 Pastry Chef of the Year, won Silver and Gold medals in the Grand Salon Culinaire and placed second at the Les Masters du Chocolat competition.

Chef Donald also represented the USA four times in Le Coupe du Monde de la Patisserie and captained the winning team at the 2011 National Pastry Team Championship.

In his spare time Chef Donald created the spectacular “Official” Birthday Cakes for the City of Beverly Hills’ Diamond Jubilee (1988) & Centennial (2014) Anniversary celebrations. The Centennial creation yielded 15,000 ample servings and not a crumb was left!

After the radio broadcast at the Big Island Chocolate Festival Gala, Chef Donald came away with both the Judges’ choice for “Best Plated Dessert” as well as People’s Choice recognition for favorite “Sweet” treat.

The Big Cheese Grilled Cheese CompetitionThe “SoCal Restaurant Show” was honored to be part of the Judges’ Panel for the 4th Annual “The Big Cheese” Grilled Cheese Festival & Competition on National Grilled Cheese Day at Orange’s Provisions Market.

We’ll chat with the winner of the People’s Choice recognition, Lisa Gilmore, and recap the winning sandwich from the Judges’ Panel (The Water Brewery with Chefs Carli Savedra and Raya Belna.)

Show 116, April 4, 2015: Tacolandia and Tacorazzo Bill Esparza

Bill EsparzaThe Third Annual Tacolandia presented by LA Weekly is set for El Pueblo de Los Angeles in Downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, June 6th. The featured attraction is 80 top taco vendors curated by the World’s First Tacorazzo, Bill Esparza.

All restaurants have tasty samples of their signature gourmet tacos for attendees to enjoy. Complete with live mariachi music, cash bars with beer, wine and cocktails as well as awards for best tacos in various categories presented by The Vendys, Tacolandioa 2015 will be LA Weekly’s largest event of the year.

This year LA Weekly’s Tacolandia will partner with The Vendy Awards to crown six taco purveyors amongst the 80 of Los Angeles and Mexico’s top taco vendors who will be at the event. Three States in Mexico will be represented. Categories will include Best Traditional Taco, Best New School (Non-Traditional) Taco, Best Street Taco, People’s Choice and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tacolandia (already out of control) grows in popularity each year and there are a finite number of VIP and General Admission tickets available to assure guest comfort and avoid overcrowding. VIP tickets, unfortunately, are all gone. It’s expected that General Admission tickets will be sold-out by month’s end. GA pricing is $35 per ticket through April 12th. Make your plans accordingly…

Show 84, August 16, 2014: Long Beach CANstruction benefiting Food Finders

Canstruction Long BeachThe first CANstruction Competition is coming to Long Beach on August 21st. The resulting collections of food benefit Food Finders food rescue / food bank. It’s going to be a wild 12 hours benefiting people in need!

Four teams comprised of five prominent local architectural and engineering firms will transform thousands of cans of food into larger than life artistic masterpieces. The structures may be built up to 10’ x 10’ x 10’ and will be comprised of edible canned goods totaling over 7,000 lbs.

The completed structures will be on display to the public from August 22nd through September 2nd. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to “vote” for their favorite structure by donating additional cans of food and placing them in bins located next to their favorite structure resulting in the “People’s Choice” award.

CANstruction was founded in 1992 to help promote the design community and raise food donations for hunger relief efforts. CANstruction events have been held in over 140 cities worldwide donating over 15 million pounds of canned foods to alleviate the concern of hunger and malnutrition.
