The new The Mar Vista restaurant in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles is a chef-driven, food-first experience with locally sourced farm-to-table ingredients, unusual & rare- label wines and an eclectic lineup of live music. The culinary personalities behind it are Executive Chefs D. Brandon Walker and Jill Davie. It’s dinner nightly and Sunday Brunch. We’ll meet “Chef D.”

Out regular contributor, Anita Lau, “diary of a Mad Hungry Woman” blogger, is just back from a visit to the ever-evolving Hong Kong. She will share a pair of her memorable Hong Kong dining experiences, Haku and Ju Xing Home. It’s the last Weekend of DINE LBC Long Beach Restaurant Week. Anita has her Top 10 picks posted on her Website but provides us with two suggestions for now or future dining.

When we last visited Victor Novak, the accomplished Brewmaster for Golden Road Brewing, he had just started brewing in Anaheim in a new facility located just across the street (E. Orangewood Ave.) from Angel Stadium. In addition to the existing Taproom a distinctive brewery restaurant and expansive outdoor beer garden are moving toward completion. Victor joins us with the effervescent update.

The Meatheads from West Coast Prime Meats, Terry Hanks and Jay Henderson, are back with us. In the smoker is advancing the great BBQ debate about which rates higher between Brisket and Tri-Tip. The Meatheads have spirited opinions. Also, some good information on the lesser known cuts of beef that are worthy of your attention, versatile and value priced.

Nutritionist & Chef Patricia Greenberg runs The Fitness Gourmet ushering in a new era of bite-size livable health, nutrition and fitness solutions. Her new cookbook, written with her teen-age daughter, Gabriella, is Scrumptious Sandwiches, Salads and Snacks – Simple, healthy recipes, for school, work and home. We’ll chat about healthy eating that also tastes good with The Fitness Gourmet.

On now on weekdays through August 31st is the CHAYA Downtown Summer Festival 2017. It’s a Japanese beer garden, yakitori, sorbet cocktails, sake, video games, air hockey, foosball, shuffleboard and more.

To partake of the celebration, come relax and bask in the lantern-covered Japanese Beer Garden located on the CHAYA patio while savoring a rare Japanese Whisky and cold premium Sapporo, or sip a Sparkling Sake or CHAYA Downtown’s special house-made Sangria. For those that want to cool down and indulge, CHAYA Downtown will also be preparing two refreshing and delicious Yuzu and Cherry Blossom Summer Sorbet Cocktails.

For those craving that perfect summer bite, CHAYA Downtown Executive Chef Joji Inoue is firing up the Yakitori Grill and has you covered with his ChickenTsukune and Shisito & Mushroom Yakitori Skewers for just $2.50 each.  Chef Inoue is also preparing his Tako Tacos with grilled octopus, Asian slaw and wasabi Miso for $4, Fried Noodles made with pork belly, cabbage and pickled ginger for $6, Grilled Squid with a chili-miso dipping sauce for $12, and summer’s finest grilled Corn on the Cob with a sweet soy glaze for $4. And for the sweet tooth lovers, there is a choice of three Sweet CrepesMatcha and Azuki BeansNutella and Strawberry or the Banana Crème for just $7 each.

The Mar Vista’s menu, affectionately dubbed progressive Los Angeles cuisine, features renditions of local favorites enhanced by wide-ranging flavors from L.A.’s diverse communities. Walker, Davie, and Chef de Cuisine Jorge Rivas infuse dishes with flavors from North Africa, Central America, Asia, and the Mediterranean to represent the varied diaspora. Daily specials, a Brazilian churrasco, and Davie’s signature Cranked, a tableside device that uses vintage grinders to make “ugly” fruit into granita, complete the offerings.

Further enriching the community-driven concept, The Mar Vista presents live music performances on Friday and Saturday evenings with a late-night menu accompanying the mellow sounds from a bluegrass or jazz band, among others.

“Haku is a French concept using predominantly Japanese ingredients. The restaurant is a collaboration between Chef Hideaki Matsuo of Kashiwaya in Osaka, Japan, and Chef Agustin Balbi, who is Argentinian. Chef Balbi has spent many years in Japan and his menu is a reflection of the aesthetically stunning cuisine, but is also, well thought out and exquisitely executed.”

Ju Xing Home is where Michelin-starred chefs go when they’re off duty, and wanting a bite before heading home for the night. “Chef/Owner Mr. Ng is a humble man who takes immense pride in preparing dishes for his customers. He is in the kitchen, personally cooking every single dish which hits the table.”

In a fun historical footnote Victor and his brewmaster team and now brewing in Anaheim on the original 15- barrel brewing system that started Golden Road Brewing in their initial Atwater Village brewery in 2011.

The Anaheim Taproom is open 7 days a week. It features a rotating selection of 20 Golden Road styles and beer is also available to-go.

There is convenient & ample on-site parking. Here’s a great tip…On game-days at The Big A guests can park at Golden Road, partake of The Taproom and then walk across Orangewood to Angel Stadium.

CHAYA Brasserie Beverly HillsCHAYA Brasserie Beverly Hills (located adjacent to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) is a pioneer in bringing innovative Franco-Japanese cuisine served in a stylish environment to greater Los Angeles. The company has a 400-year history in Japan. Amazingly they are celebrating their 30th anniversary in Los Angeles this year. Their celebration kicked-off last Sunday with a “Summer Festival” tasting and celebratory activities continue through October.

Chaya owner Yuta Tsunoda and long-time CHAYA Executive Corporate Chef Shigefumi Tachibe were with us to share their rich history. Chef Tachibe has been with then since the very beginning when La Petite Chaya debuted in Los Angeles 1981.

Yudo Tsunoda of Chaya BrasserieChaya owner Yuta Tsunoda and long-time CHAYA Executive Corporate Chef Shigefumi Tachibe continued their interview.

Among Chaya’s many achievements in Los Angeles they are famous for creating the ever popular tuna tartare which is properly credited to Chef Tachine.

Chef Tachibe is also a pioneer in macrobiotic cuisine. CHAYA’s latest concept is M Café featuring macrobiotic cuisine. The original concept café is on Melrose Ave. in Hollywood. Newer locations are located in Culver City and Beverly Hills.

“Macrobiotic cuisine is extremely balanced, and therefore much better for your health than the latest trendsetting diet, and at M Café, the food is healthy but tastes indulgent,” says Tachibe.

CHAYA has locations in Venice, Downtown Los Angeles, and San Francisco. All are a bit different to reflect the communities they are in. Downtown Los Angeles has a thriving outdoor Beer Garden during the Summer.

It seems appropriate to be talking about breakfast this morning. We’re chronicling some recent breakfast dining experiences from Orange County to Las Vegas.

The culinary roots of the founding Tsunoda Family stretch back 400 years when the first CHAYA opened in Japan. It is still in operation today as a restaurant.

CHAYA has four popular restaurants in California including the Flagship in Beverly Hills, Venice, Downtown Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Each location embraces the distinct neighborhood that surrounds it. For instance, CHAYA Brasserie San Francisco, located on the Embarcadero, features sweeping views of the Bay Bridge.

CHAYA also operates two Los Angeles-based locations of M Café, a casual macrobiotic eatery.

Kedric Francis of Coast Magazine and the Orange County Register MagazineMan about Orange County, the always debonair Kedric Francis, is with us in-studio. Kedric is the distinguished Executive Editor of the monthly Coast Orange County Magazine. Kedric is also the co-founder and Executive Editor of the OC Register Magazine.

Kedric will preview a couple of unusual staycation ideas for the OC as well as an exciting food & wine festival set for the Central Coast in late September.

It’s Margarita time! Food journalist and Mexican cuisine-authority, Nancy Zaslavsky, is with us to share the “World’s Best Margaritas Recipe.”

Zaslavsky is an author, cooking teacher, and culinary tour leader specializing in the foods of Mexico. She penned the James Beard Award-nominated, A Cook’s Tour of Mexico.

Daniel Mattern of Cooks CountyRegulars to the show know that Chef Jet is a huge fan of Cook’s County in Los Angeles and dines there often. Starting this month (every Tuesday) it’s their inaugural California Craft Beer and Food Festival.

Chef/Proprietor Daniel Mattern has invited seven of his favorite breweries to come pour their beer selection at the “California Craft Beer and Food Festival” at Cook’s County. The series of beer-centric dinners will take place on Tuesday evenings from August 6th to September 24th. Menus will be tailored around the different craft beers and many dishes will be prepared using beer as a significant ingredient. Each evening’s menu consists of five courses, and all courses, including dessert, will be thoughtfully paired with beer.

Las Vegas has never seen anything quite like this before and it’s a big one !

life-is-beautifulIt’s the Life is Beautiful festival set for many blocks of Downtown Las Vegas from October 25th through Sunday, October 27th. It’s an impressive line-up of world class music, food, art and learning. Tickets are on sale.

With more than 60 prominent chefs and restaurants, 24 wineries and 24 breweries participating in the culinary part of the festival alone, L.I.B presents the attendees with a full-scale food festival experience.

“The food experiences of L.I.B. were carefully designed to be interactive, innovative and unexpected,” says Jolene Mannina, Head of Culinary Arts for the festival. “Working with the vision of our Culinary Advisory Board of 12 world-renowned chefs, we’ve created an approach that we feel will set us apart from other food festivals, giving both our patrons and chefs a chance to enjoy something new, fresh and, of course, delicious.”

Kevin WestCanning, pickling, and preserving has really taken off in local home kitchens. Food journalist Kevin West, a certified food preserver, has just launched Saving the Season: A cook’s guide to home canning, pickling, and preserving from Knopf. In addition to the expected recipes West has mini profiles of his favorite farmers and farm adventures as part of the book.

Kevin is at The Beverly Hills Farmers Market on Sunday, August 4th as part of Pickle Fest. He’ll be signing the book there from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

The block-wide ethnic food court at the historic Grand Central Market (dating back to 1896) in Downtown Los Angeles is undergoing a renaissance. Kevin West is consulting on that effort to bring exciting, one-of-a-kind distinctive food businesses to the Market. It’s already happening…
