Sherry YardThe Los Angeles Times The Taste is an annual festival celebrating the flavors of the world in Southern California style. Hosted by The Times’ editorial staff and acclaimed L.A. chefs and bartenders, The Taste will transform Hollywood’s Paramount Pictures Studios into the ultimate epicurean pop-up and block party over Labor Day weekend (Sept. 1-3). Admission to each of the five events includes unlimited tastings from the city’s best kitchens and a variety of wine, beer and seasonal cocktails. Chef highlights from the 3-day event include Sherry Yard, Jet Tila and Antonia Lofaso.

Noelle Carter and Chef Sherry Yard host the Sunday Block Party from 12 Noon to 3:00 p.m. Great food and good times are the order of the day at the block party on the backlot, where Yard will demystify pastry-baking for home cooks and David LeFevre (Manhattan Beach Post) will give a master class on making biscuits. Noelle Carter will host a talk with Chris Phelps (Salt’s Cure) about what it means to brunch at some of the most innovative spots around town, with additional panelists to be announced. Restaurants include Cheezus, Cocobella Creamery, Dog Haus, E.A.K. Ramen, Hotville Chicken & Chops, Hummus Yummy Food Truck, MessHall, Otium, Rosaliné, Slapfish The Butcher’s Daughter, Tuck Room Tavern and more.

Sherry Yard of Westwood’s Tuck Room Tavern joins us in this segment with more of the sweet and savory details. Sherry’s Tuck Room Tavern brunch is so popular that it’s now being done on both Saturday and Sunday.

She is just back from Dobbs Ferry, NY from the opening of the City Perch Kitchen & Bar in the new iPic theater complex there.

Jet Tila and a heritage pig at Cochon 555 in 2013Chef Jet Tila, the Emeritus Host of the “SoCal Restaurant Show” really needs no introduction. He’s the Royal Thai Government’s official Culinary Ambassador to the United States. Jet is the most-used permanent solo judge on Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen with host Alton Brown.

Jet is with us to discuss his participation in Food Network’s upcoming “Chopped All-Stars Tournament.” A cool $75,000 is on the line for the winning celebrity chef’s charity!

Jet’s heat is “All-Stars Tournament : Part 4” where there is just one more spot in the Grand Finale up for grabs. Competing with Chef Jet are Rocco DiSpiritio, Fabio Viviani and Lee Anne Wong. “The All-Stars open the appetizer baskets and find a succulent seafood and an Asian pastry. In the entrée round, the chefs will need to get creative in order to cook a perfect piece of beef in time. And some fish-shaped snacks meet crystals that pop in the dessert round.”

Sherry Yard (ex-Spago) is the Culinary Director for iPic Theaters. She has just started a celebrity guest chef series there. In May Chef Jet will have a signature menu item available at the iPics in Westwood and Pasadena. It’s Tuna on Crispy Rice Cake. The beverage pairing is a Tokyo Iced Tea with jasmine tea-infused vodka, balsam, Riesling, and honey-pineapple-yuzu-lychee salsa.

The Princess of Pastry joins us to chat about the upcoming C-CAP’s Sweet & Savory Spectacular benefit, iPic Theaters, and the soon-to-be Helms Bakery in Los Angeles.

Sherry is the honorary co-chair (with Suzanne Goin of Lucques, A.O.C. and Tavern) of C-CAP’s Sweet & Savory Spectacular Benefit set for Sunday Afternoon, Oct.,19th at The Art Institute’s campus in Santa Monica just above the airport. Both of Sherry’s current projects, iPic Theaters and Helms Bakery, will be serving distinctive tastes from their menus. Sherry serves on the Los Angeles Advisory Board of the Careers through Culinary Arts Program as well as on the National Board.

C-CAP provides at-risk high school students with culinary arts training. The best-of-the-best of these students compete for culinary scholarships to the top schools. In Los Angeles alone some $600,000 is scholarships were awarded this year! These promising students are the career hospitality people of tomorrow.

At the “Sweet & Savory Spectacular” Sherry will be serving her signature, from-scratch Naan-chos from iPic and the OMG cookie from Helms Bakery. Yum…

He also is the co-founder of Los Angeles Ale Works and is a founding member of the L.A. Beer Bloggers.

Today’s guest host is Executive Chef Steve Samson of Sotto in Los Angeles located just East of Century City. He was previously the high profile executive chef at Piero Selvaggio’s Valentino in Santa Monica. Orange County diners remember him as the opening executive chef at Pizzeria Ortica in Costa Mesa.

Salt & Straw partners with local artisans, producers and farmers to create one-of-a-kind, gourmet flavors. Their ice cream is handmade using only all natural and local cream.

The company, which began in 2011, has three scoop shops in Portland and now one in Los Angeles. Each shop serves scoops, sundaes, milkshakes and floats as well as pints to go.

The “Early Autumn Harvest Series,” available now through October, is a cheat sheet for Southern California’s best seasonal ingredients. Highlights include sweet almonds from Kern County, last of the season peaches from Burkart Organic Farms in Dinuba, CA, Butter & Salt doughnuts from Sidecar Doughnuts and Grand Poppy liqueur from Greenbar Distillery in Downtown L.A.

In addition to the lunch menu available daily, Anepalco serves brunch seven days from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Last Saturday afternoon at UCLA Chef Steve was one of the participating celebrity chefs at L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade culinary benefit. Samson was paired with one of the young cheftestantants from Fox’s MasterChef Jr. series.

Sotto delivers an honest, market-driven menu of regionally-inspired Southern Italian dishes, including fresh housemade pastas and Neapolitan pizza cooked in an artisan wood burning oven. This wood burning oven was built onsite by Neapolitan craftsmen using traditional Old World techniques.
