Show 478, June 11, 2022: Tehachapi Heritage Grain Project with Sherry Mandell and Sugarbear Bakes’ Steph Chen

Sherry Mandell and Stephanie Chen of Gather for Good

Gather for Good’s Co-founder, Sherry Mandell is also a partner in the Tehachapi Heritage Grain Project. She is affectionally referred to as the “Fairy Grain Mother.” Sherry’s mission is “spreading glutenous joy far and wide.” Her Gather for Good Co-founder, artisan baker and pastry chef Stephanie Chen, operates Sugarbear Bakes. Pastry Chef Steph uses Tehachapi Grain flour in her incredibly delicious hand pies and cakes.

“The Tehachapi Heritage Grain Project’s aim is to preserve and grow heritage organic grains which are naturally drought tolerant and low in gluten.”

“Wheat and the other small cereal grains have been planted in the Golden State since the establishment of missions in the 1760s. Our Mediterranean climate is ideal to the growing of the annual grasses collectively known as grains. California once led the nation in barley production and was second in wheat production, but in the early 20th century grain farming began to be replaced by higher value orchards, vineyards, and row crops.”

“However, grains (especially heirloom varieties) tend to have very low water requirements, and remain well-suited for California. Tehachapi Heritage Grain Project is trying to bring back many different types of heirloom grains (non-GMO) for use by home cooks, chefs, bakers, and brewers.”

Sherry Mandell is at the Wednesday and Saturday Santa Monica Farmers Markets with the Tehachapi Heritage Grain Project flour. She is based in the Weiser Family Farms stand. Pre-ordering is necessary via the website.

Sherry Mandell and Pastry Chef Stephanie Chen continue with us now providing an overview of the Tehachapi Heritage Grain Project.

Show 471, April 23, 2022: Jennifer Bushman, Chief Marketing Officer Kvarøy Arctic Salmon Part One

Jennifer Bushman of Kvaroy Arctic

“Kvarøy (say “Kwa-ray”) is a postcard-pretty Norwegian island located on the Arctic Circle. It was here back in 1976 that Alf Olsen and his son Geir founded Kvarøy Arctic. Today, the now third-generation family-run business is driven by the same goal set by their grandfather—“to provide salmon of very high quality, without compromising either the environment or the welfare of the fish.” Kvarøy Arctic is redefining the salmon-farming industry through innovation and deep concern for the future of the fish they raise and the waters they live on. Kvarøy Arctic helped develop the non-GMO food they provide their salmon. This has resulted in an omega-3 content that is twice as much as other farmed salmon, and a highly sustainable fish-in/fish-out ratio of 0.48 to 1.”

At Natural Products Expo West last month in Anaheim Kvarøy Arctic introduced their Salmon Hot Dogs. “This flavorful hot dog is packed with the full recommended allowance of Omega 3’s in one serving. They are non-GMO, gluten-free, and can be stored in the freezer for up to a year. Simply thaw and they are ready to grill, broil or pan fry.” The Kvarøy Arctic Salmon Hot Dogs (2 dogs in a 7 oz. package) are available in Original Recipe, Original & Cheese, Jalapeno & Cheese and Chile & Cheese styles. There is also a new line of Salmon Burgers, skin-backed in four flavors.

Kvarøy Arctic’s Chief Marketing Officer, Jennifer Bushman, is our guest providing all the background on this family-owned, sustainable fish farm. As they like to say, “It’s the salmon that seafood people have been waiting for.”

David BellHouweling’s Tomatoes (Mastery Under Glass,) is a family-owned, world-renowned greenhouse tomato grower with facilities in Camarillo, and Delta, BC. A new facility in Mona, Utah is on the threshold of production. Founded by Cornelius Houweling as a grower of fresh flowers, it’s now led by his son, Casey.

Houweling’s is dedicated to delivering a full complement of scrumptious tomatoes year-round, while constantly innovating to reduce its environmental footprint. They are also pioneers in branding their premium tomatoes and cucumbers.

Houweling’s tomatoes are grown from 3rd party verified 100 per cent Non-GMO seeds.

Houweling’s Tomatoes grows year-round, sustainable greenhouse tomatoes on 175 acres in Camarillo, CA, and Delta, BC. In January of 2015, Houweling’s will begin harvesting from their new 28 acre farm in Mona, UT.

David Bell, the Chief Marketing Officer for Houwelings, joins us with the fascinating story.
